Want to replicate this custom American oak shelving in our Balmain house?

We’ve pulled together our guide on displaying beautiful accent pieces which elevate and centre a space.

The first step, take everything off your shelves. We always start decorating built-ins by clearing them off completely. As much as it may seem daunting to start from nothing, it’s helpful to take everything off and slowly build it out.

Secondly, it’s okay to buy some new pieces, especially ones that have served as focal inspirations for the home, but don’t feel like you need to buy everything new for your built-ins. Look around your home or go through your existing styling features and play around with different pieces.

And while you’re mixing and matching items, you also want to vary the heights. We typically like to group in threes (three items together), but all three of these items should be varying heights. But if you love two vases together and their height is too similar, add some books under one to create varying heights.
