August 30, 2019 Trend Watch: Standing Out In 2020

With the world of architecture and design constantly evolving, influenced not just by current and upcoming trends but ideologies and perceptions about our place in the world. In general, design and architecture are seeing a move of gigantic proportions towards sustainability and environmentalism that is unlikely to slow down over the next decade. But while this is arguably the most talked about topic in the industry, there are other trends making a splash in 2019 and that are set to gain even more popularity in 2020.

TREND WATCH: STANDING OUT IN 2020

Wallpaper: a modern statement

TREND WATCH: STANDING OUT IN 2020

It’s time to enjoy an incredible blast from the past as vintage chic returns in the form of wallpapers featuring bold florals, agate and stunning feather and bird motifs. As marble and geometric patterns continue to enjoy popularity among designers and homeowners alike, both homes and public spaces are continuing to push the boundaries of daring style. The trick with this new school of wallpaper is to utilise it mindfully and strategically in order to create maximum impact. With such an adventurous style choice, it’s best to heed the adage less is more.

Reused and locally sourced materials

Spurred on by environmentalism, savvy home designers and award winning architects in Sidney seek innovative ways to reduce the building industry’s impact on the environment.

Always looking to recycle, handmade sustainable pieces of furniture and even repurposed items like a porcelein trough being used as a bucket/trough sink in a new home. These reclaimed materials, especially the locally sourced ones, can add another dimension of character and uniqueness to your luxury home.

The Instagram-friendly closet

While it may have some folks sighing and wondering if social media will permeate every area of our homes and lives (most likely), Instagram-friendly closets don’t have to mean that you’re posting pictures of your shoe rack or delicates every hour on the hour.

Regardless of the aesthetic value that a beautifully wallpapered closet might add to your entryway, revamping your closet doesn’t have to be about anyone but you. The idea of an Instagram-friendly closet simply means a space that is more open, organised and pleasant to be in. It’s a great time to cull the things you don’t use anymore and create a space that promotes happiness and calm.

Less noise, more light

What’s not to love about more natural light and less noise? The noise should be coming from your stereo, not construction next door or the kids playing in the next room. Noise reduction architecture and design can be anything from double glazed windows or soft furnishings to acoustical site planning or the addition of a courtyard.

A bold trend

This year and next are all about bold colours, materials and patterns. The iconic colours for 2019 are millennial pink, burnt yellow, forest green, richer colour palettes, black and white decor but some other trending styles for the coming year include:

  • Geometric patterns
  • Bold colours and patterns (especially for kitchen splashbacks)
  • Velvet (especially armchairs and couches)
  • Statement beds (i.e. canopy and four poster)
  • Acrylic furniture (i.e. coffee tables)

White has dominated the interior design scene for over a decade and, echoing the maximalism ethos, bold character and out-there feature pieces are a refreshing change to neutral tones, white walls and aggressive minimalism.

As trends come and go, it can be difficult to edit the seemingly endless options to create outcomes that suit your life, environment and taste. Ultimately, whether you’re

browsing new luxury house designs in NSW and planning to build or finding ways to update and maximise your forever home, it’s important to adopt styles that resonate not just with your personality and ethos, but with your emotions too. Something you truly love will always be timeless.
